I made this film as a statement about how important hair is to portrayal of women in film. Long hair is usually associated with femininity, and cutting or bobbing ones hair has been used as a symbol of liberation and defiance of social norms. My intention was to create a stop-motion kind of effect that follows the transition between long and short hair. I chose the music as a reference to F. Scott Fitzgeralds short story Bernice bobs her hair, as this story portrays the redefinition of femininity as negative, and I wanted to present an opposing view. I wanted the video be an open-ended question, so the exclusion of dialogue leaves the internal meaning of this external change to the audience.
